Top spot for cycling in Croatia – and also popular with hikers - is Istria’s Parenzana Trail, formerly a 130km-long narrow gauge railway line that meanders through the Istrian countryside, linking Trieste with Porec.

This is a great way to explore the countryside, as the trail winds through forests and along streams, past hidden chapels and ancient ruins. The most stunning sections of the Parenzana are those around Buje, Livade and Motovun.

The MTB Parenzana (25-27 September 2015) is an official World Bicycle Federation race that attracts professional cyclists from around the world. Don’t let the professionals put you off – a series of fun events are planned throughout the weekend for anyone who prefers getting around on two wheels.
