Marunada festival

Visit Istria during the famous Marunada chestnut festival (10-25 October), Lovran’s annual celebration of the sweet chestnuts or maruni which grow only on Istria’s Opatija Riviera.
Larger and sweeter than normal chestnuts, the maruni have remained one of the area's most important exports since the 17th century.

Festivities are focussed around the town's main square where visitors get the opportunity to gorge on chestnuts in the form of cakes, pancakes, purées, soups and ice cream and local restaurants lay on special menus, with dishes such as rump steak with maruni sauce.
