THE VILLAGE AND SURROUNDING AREA
Liznjan
is located at the tip of the Istrian peninsula on the Croatian Adriatic
coastline. Liznjan is a charming agricultural and fishing village set
on high ground about one kilometre from the coast. The village has three
general stores providing a wide range of groceries as well as fresh bread
and vegetables. There is also an excellent butchers.
There
are three restaurants. The tourist trade is restricted mainly to bed and
breakfast and private apartments rental. The neighbouring village of Medulin
(less than 2 kilometres distant) has a much more extensive tourist trade
with several hotels and a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants.
The
principal town of the area is Pula some 7 kilometres away. Pula has several
modern resort hotels, a historic town centre with a number of Roman monuments,
including a well preserved first century amphitheatre (the sixth largest
in the world), museums, a busy port and shipyard, extensive shopping and
a colourful fruit and vegetable market. Day trips to areas of interest
such as the islands of Brioni or to Venice, can be booked through local
tourist offices.
The
coastline in the area is mainly rocky but heavily indented with many sheltered
bays, pebble beaches, spectacular headlands and, in Medulin bay, many
small islands lying close inshore. The water is exceptionally clean and
perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Most of the coastline around Liznjan
is totally undeveloped and it is possible to find stretches of coastline,
accessed by foot or along farm tracks which will be virtually deserted
even in mid summer. Sandy beaches can be found in Medulin and on some
of the small islands.

THINGS TO DO
Swimming:
We are sure that you will love swimming in the warm and crystal clear
Adriatic sea.
Walking:
There is plenty of opportunity to enjoy fresh air and scenery by walking
along the coast or following paths and farm tracks through the countryside.
Riding:
There is a riding stable about 3 kilometres from Liznjan.
Boating:
Small boats, dinghies and windsurfers can be hired from Medulin and Pula
(Verudela). Charter companies operate from the marinas at Pula(Veruda)
and Pomer. The coastline and inshore islands are ideal for exploring by
small boat.
Scuba Diving:
There are scuba diving schools in Pula and Medulin
Culture:
museums and Roman monuments in Pula and local archaeological sites.
Entertainment: Nightclubs in neighbouring
village of Medulin and in Pula. Regular concerts (pop and classical) in
the atmospheric Roman arena in Pula.
Eating out:
Local restaurants in Liznjan and Medulin offer a varied menu including
excellent seafood whilst in Pula there are several restaurants offering
first class cuisine and fine wines. For example Valsabbion
and Vela
Nera.
Day
trips:Make your own day trips (or join organised
boat or coach trips from Pula) to the beautiful coastal town of Rovinj,
the islands if Brioni, the spectacular rocky headland of Rt Kamenjak or
the many picturesque hilltop towns of central Istria. Further afield make
day trips or short tours to Venice (by ferry from Pula or by car), take
the ferry to the rugged island of Cres or visit the stunning caves at
Postoina in Slovenia.

GETTING THERE
Fly or Fly Drive: From
the UK, Ryanair
and Easyjet
provide the cheapest travel option. Ryanair
fly to Pula airport, just 12 kilometres from Liznjan. This is the easiest
and often cheapest solution. Alternatives are to fly Easyjet
to Rijeka airport (on the island of Krk) which is less than 2 hours to
Liznjan or to fly to Trieste in North Italy (2hrs 30mins drive). There
are also cheap flights daily by Ryanair
to Treviso (just north of Venice) and by Easyjet
to Venice (Marco Polo Airport). A couple of days in Venice makes a great
two centre holiday. Another option is to fly Easyjet
to Ljubljana in Slovenia (3hrs 30mins). This route opens up the option
of a day or two in the beautiful Slovenian lakes of Bled and Bohinj.
Globespan
fly to Pula from Durham, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
From Scandinavia, Scandjet
fly directly to Pula from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Copenhagen.
Flights to Pula from London Heathrow
(via Zagreb) on Croatia
Airlines are another option. Connections to Pula are better on some
days than others. Croatia
Airlines also have a Monday flight direct from London Gatwick to Pula.
Check details with:
Croatia
Airlines Tel: 020 8563 0022
Drive: Fom
the UK via France and Italy or Germany and Austria. We would normally
allow one overnight stop on the way and can suggest some suitable locations.
You can take the Motor rail to Milan and drive from there.
Other Routes:
There are more exotic options which will allow you to tour in Italy and
Croatia. For example fly to Ancona in Italy and take a ferry across the
Adriatic to Zadar and then drive or take ferries up the Croatian coast
and islands.

Skiing
It may seem surprising but from Liznjan you could take a day trip to go
skiing. There are two ski resorts within 2 to 3 hours drive from Liznjan.
The closest is Platak in the mountains above Rijeka where the ski runs
provide spectacular views over the Adriatic and Gulf of Kvarner (www.platak.hr)
. A little further inland is the Bjelolasica resort (www.bjelolasica.hr).
For a two centre holiday providing several days of skiing you could fly
to Rijeka and stay for a day or two at either of these resorts or fly
to Ljubljana (Easyjet) and ski in the Slovenian resorts (Details from
www.slovenia.info).
