Vela Luka bay
Vela Luka means "Big Harbour" in Croatian. It is the largest town on the island of Korcula and the second largest town in the Croatian islands, a home to 4100 people. It is situated on the west side of Korcula island, at the end of a 9.2 km long and sheltered bay which is full of beaches and coves with classy holiday villas, apartments and hotels. The town itself is made up of lovely Mediterranean style stone town houses, villas and cottages, interspersed with lively squares full of cafes, bars and restaurants. If you stay in town, you are immersed in the life of narrow cobbled streets, charming shops, fish markets and always just a few steps away from the sea. Further afield from the town, in the numerous aquamarine bays, there are sumptuous villas with pools, lovely beaches and tranquillity.
Close to Vela Luka there is the small island of Proizd, whose beach was voted the most beautiful Adriatic beach in 2007. Vela Luka is synonymous with olive growing and fishing. To find out more about the production of olive oil, you can visit the Zlokic Collection of Olive Growing and Olive Oil, where you will have a chance to see an ethnographic collection related to olive growing and to sample and buy olive oil.Art and culture are a part of everyday life in Vela Luka, where many artists have settled. Visit museums and galleries that are located in the old town building where there is a Centre for Culture next to the Parish Church of St. Joseph. During the summer months you can enjoy 'Luka Summer' (Lusko lito) which is a series of local concerts, dances and performances. While away the evening with a cool beer, and watch the amazing old martial dance performed by men with swords.

Apart from glorious swimming, there are diving schools, boating, hiking and bicycling along the scenic bicycle trails. The weather is superb, with 2600 hours of sunshine in a year. Near to the town, up a steep hill there is Vela Spila, the 20 000 years old cave. Important finds from the cave, such as ceramic bowls, amphorae and bones are exhibited in the Culture museum. The views from up there are stunning.

Vela Luka can be reached directly by a ferry from Split. Twice a day there is a car and passenger ferry and in addition, once a day there a fast catamaran ferry for foot passengers only. Daily bus service from Dubrovnik to Vela Luka via Korcula Town – check info and timetable. Weekly ferry service from Pescara (Italy) to Vela Luka (also see Vela Luka to Pescara ferries) – this fast ferry is sailing in high season only – July and August. It takes just over 4 hours to reach Vela Luka from Italy.
