If you are romantic and a history enthusiast, lover of good food and wine, comfort, peace and quiet, if you like amazing views from your pool, exploring the divine countryside and Mediterranean towns, come to the gorgeous Istrian town of Kastav and stay in family villa Alessi. This hundred year old town house (built in 1900, renovated in 2010, 180 square metres of living space) is located in the magical old hill top town of Kastav, surrounded by medieval walls and towers.
The town hosts a Summer of Culture Festival, with acclaimed local and international artists. Autumns are for olive and grape harvests and the town festival called White Sunday which celebrates the beginning of autumn and new wine, including a musical and cultural programme. Also in October you can visit the nearby coastal village of Lovran and participate in Marunada, listed among the food festivals not to be missed by the Guardian newspaper. This is the feast of chestnuts, which are the sweetest local variety called maruni, which gives the festival its name. You can taste numerous sweet and savoury dishes made out of chestnuts and indulge in the generally fabulous local cuisine of home made pastas, fresh vegetables, fish, air-dried hams, steaks with truffles. For nightlife, visit the grand resort of Opatija, a few minutes away by car or taxi.
Although the villa has quite a few steps, there are two ground floor bedrooms. People with serious mobility problems may find it difficult to negotiate all the steps.
On the ground floor, there are two double bedrooms, each with a large double bed. One has the original, rough old stone floor and the other has wooden floors. One of the bedrooms has an en-suite shower room which is also used by the second downstairs bedroom. This is the oldest part of the house and may suit those who love ancient houses, but those with more modern taste should choose the new, upper bedrooms.
A staircase leads to the large, partially galleried, bright sitting room, open plan with an antique fireplace, but separated from the kitchen and dining area by a couple of steps. All are beautifully furnished with antique chests and chandeliers, in keeping with the age and style of the house. For seating there is a large L-shaped sofa and 3 armchairs. A satellite TV, DVD, CD and music player and WiFi are provided. The beautiful country kitchen is equipped with a gas cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, cooking utensils and tableware. From the dining room there are large doors opening out onto the garden terrace. In the laundry room, there is a washing machine, a tumble dryer, iron and ironing board.
From the sitting room a wooden staircase leads to the top floor with a modern master bedroom and a bedroom with bunk-beds, particularly suitable for children. These bedrooms share a new family bathroom which has a bathtub with a separate shower.
The villa has a very pretty and unique garden, which has an amazing view over the countryside, church spires and town roofs. A covered terrace provides a shady sitting zone, and there are several tables and chairs for outdoor dining. A few steps up the garden is a large, brick built barbecue. The garden also has a children's play area (sandpit and swing on the tree). The villa is a listed building and has a small, round 20 square metre pool, depth 1.35 metres. From the pool there is an amazing view over the valley. For sunbathing there are 6 sun loungers and two parasols. In addition, 6 other chairs are in the garden. Pool towels are provided.
