Villa Katarina is situated within the ancient walls of Mali Ston. Unusually for a town house of this type, it is detached and stands within its own plot with a small terrace/garden area around it. Mali Ston is a picturesque fortified medieval town just 40 minutes drive from Dubrovnik and less than an hour from Dubrovnik airport. Villa Katarina is a listed building that has been sensitively renovated. It is now a luxury house that retains its original character. The area of Mali Ston within the town walls is arranged on terraces with pedestrian passageways between them.

Villa Katarina has extensive views over the harbour and bay from the front windows and from the back looks out towards the five-towered castle that stands above the town. The villa is a one minute walk to the beach and the water front restaurants around the harbour. The villa sleeps up to four people in a spacious double bedroom and a living room with comfortable daybeds and sofas. The villa is fully air-conditioned and has heating for the winter months.

The most wonderful holiday in the most perfect place
Mali Ston is the most enchanting, ancient, village with a castle and a fortified wall running across the hill to Ston. Villa Katarina is a beautiful old house in the village - just below the castle and at the start of the fortified wall which runs across the hill to Ston. It has been superbly renovated, retaining its character but with all the modern comforts. We had arrived in the dark and opening the shutters in the morning to an amazing view of the sea (even better than in the photograph) is something we'll never forget. We were there with our two adult daughters (who were very comfortable on beds in the sitting room) but it would also be perfect for a romantic getaway. It's a few steps down to the sea for swimming and there are several excellent restaurants in the village. And there's so much to see and do nearby - for all ages. There are sandy beaches, and rocky outcrops for more adventurous swimming, vineyards, wonderful scenery, very pretty villages - and, of course, Dubrovnik. If you go there, be sure to go up in the funicular. We had lunch in the excellent restaurant at the top, gazing down on the historic city. We can't wait to go back to Villa Katarina! We were also lucky enough to visit Villa Mimosa, where our son and his family were staying. That too is beautiful.

Lovely villa for two
Lovely villa for 2 in a refurbished medieval tower in a really peaceful part of the village of Mali Ston. As it is a short walk from any
roads it is very quiet. The villa is comfortable but plain and has everything you need for a short break. It was very clean with plenty
of hot water and the Wi-Fi connection was quick. The only downside was the disappointing outside area but we still loved the villa
and would recommend it.

About location:

We loved the peace and quiet of Mali Ston in May and walked along the 'walls' to Ston, well worth it. It is a much shorter and easier
walk back on the road. Loved the whole area and the peninsula. Best bits were Ston, Korcula and having a little cove to ourselves at
Zuljana and Stagnum restaurant!

Villa Katarina was a great spot to stay!
Villa Katarina was a great spot to stay! We spent a week there in July 2016 as a family (2 adults & 2 kids aged 10 & 15) and it was perfect: the seafood and the Villa in Mali Ston, Prapratno Beach, Zuljana, the Walls - just everything! The Villa was very clean, well equipped and the astonishing sea view is still in our minds!

About location:

Great & lovely base to stay! Just an hour to Dubrovnik & two to Mostar. The Ferry to Miljet only 3km away as well as Prapratno Beach. Great seafood in Mali Ston is recommended as well as hiking the Ston Walls!

About Croatian Villa Holidays:

Excellent hospitality & lots of advice and recommendations! Thank you so much!

... sympathetically renovated using local stone and timber
Villa Katarina is an old tower in Mali Ston, sympathetically renovated using local stone and timber to very high standards. The kitchen is well equipped with John Lewis pans and crockery and cutlery with familiar UK white goods. The lounge is comfortable with a TV and WiFi and above it the bedroom and en-suite are light and airy with views over the Ston Canal. The villa offers a superb base from which to explore the hidden gems on the Pelješac peninsula with its many excellent vineyards and secluded beaches. Dubrovnik is close enough for an absorbing day out, but choose a cool day! Eating out is cheap and the quality of the local seafood is superb. The Kapetanova Kuce is a stroll from the villa and has a great atmosphere with food to match. This year we discovered a new restaurant in nearby Broce. There's only one, so go find it for yourself and meet the fisherman who opened and runs it. Try the lobster which he keeps in a cage in the sea right next to where you eat! There are several islands to visit by ferry Mljet being closest. Korcula is further away but rewards the effort with a great drive to catch the ferry at Orebic. We have returned to Katarina for the last 7 years and each time we find things that we didn't see before. We always seem to be drawn to return.

So good we came back 5 times
There is so much to see and discover in the area around Ston and Mali Ston. It has taken us repeated visits to even start to do it justice. There are islands to see, eating places to try and gorgeous deserted beaches to track down. Villa Katarina is a gem, set above the small fishing village of Mali Ston. The facilities are superb and the views compliment them. Down at the water's edge are two excellent restaurants. I recommend the Kapetanova Kuca. Will we be going back? Oh yes!

What a lovely place to stay - we would highly recommend Villa Katarina. This villa was decorated so beautifully, it was a pleasure to stay in. It is detached and self contained on 3 floors, so was really nice and quiet and private. The bedroom especially was lovely, really spacious and comfortable with a very large bathroom attached. The living room was also bright and airy and comfortable. The outlook from the rooms were just lovely. The lady who looks after the villa very thoughtfully came and opened the shutters and windows ahead of our arrival to get the house aired, which was a nice touch and appreciated. The owner had also left a very helpful guide giving some good advice about where to visit. The only thing missing would be a garden or roof top terrace, but outdoor space wasn't greatly missed as the weather wasn't great during our stay, as we had quite a lot of rain. My partner also greatly appreciated the Wi-Fi and we both liked the fact that some TV channels were English for a relaxing hour after sightseeing and before heading out for dinner.....

We visited Croatia in October 2013. Croatian Villa Holidays rented us a wonderful house Villa Katarina in peaceful Mali Ston. They made a lot of good work for us because we are very sensitive for fragrance. You can hardly find this kind of lovely service in other places. And everything was working perfectly in this beautiful house with sea view.

Very pleasant stay at Villa Katarina enjoying the lovely view over the strait that greeted us each morning. We felt very much part of the neighbourhood. An authentic and welcome change from the sterile tourist villa.

Mali Ston castle and village
The picturesque town of Ston with its small sister town of Mali Ston are picturesque fortified medieval towns standing either end of the narrow isthmus that joins the Peljesac peninsula to the mainland. Rich in history they are places of culinary excellence and several renowned seafood restaurants are there. Prapratno Cove, close to Ston, provides one of the finest sandy beaches in Croatia. Dubrovnik is within 40 minutes drive down the spectacular coast road. The Dubrovnik Republic acquired control over Peljesac in 1333 and proceeded to construct massive fortifications in the form of a 5.5 kilometre wall spanning the isthmus and circling the towns of Ston and Mali Ston that stood on the coast at either end of the wall. The wall was built between 1336 and 1358 and is considered to be the longest defensive wall in Europe. Above Mali Ston and forming part of the town's fortification stands the impressive five-towered castle, Koruna. Mali Ston itself is laid out in terraces rising up the hillside and overlooking the sheltered harbour with its landmark circular Toljevac Tower built in 1478. Just across the isthmus lies Ston, laid out to a grid plan in the 14th century, the town is reminiscent of Dubrovnik and contains some fine public buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The ancient wall has been restored and is open to the public. The walk from Ston to Mali Ston provides wonderful views of the coastline and towns below. The salt pans at Ston, still operating today, are estimated to have generated two thirds of the Dubrovnik Republic's revenue in the 14th century. Nearby the small community of Broce, reached by a causeway running beside the Ston channel, was established in 1349 and has historic buildings and a delightful beach.

Eating out
Ston and Mali Ston are places of culinary excellence. There are renowned seafood restaurants, notably Bota Sare (occupying and old salt warehouse) and Kapetanova Kuca (Captain's House), on the seafront of Mali Ston. The town is famous for its oysters harvested from the local oyster beds. You can sample the excellent local white wine, Posip, and two great reds: Dingac and Postup.

Beaches
There are beaches at Mali Ston and Broce while Prapratno Cove, close to Ston, provides one of the finest sandy beaches in Croatia. The Peljesac peninsula contains some of the very best beaches that can be found on the Adriatic. A 30 minute drive up the peninsula will take you to the delightful village of Zuljana. The village houses front a small harbour and sandy beach which offers excellent swimming against a spectacular backdrop of woodland and mountains.

Mali Ston

Dubrovnik Airport is 1 hour drive from Mali Ston. An alternative is to fly to Split Airport and drive the 3 hours down the spectacular coast road, or the slightly quicker route down the inland motorway, from Split to Mali Ston. For travellers with some time to spare, the Split option provides the chance to visit Diocletian’s Palace in the centre of Split or take a full day detour on the southerly route by crossing by ferry to Supetar on the island of Brac and returning from Supetar at the southern end of the island to Makarska on the mainland.

Dubrovnik Airport

Dubrovnik Airport is located near the town of Cavtat to the south of Dubrovnik.

Split Airport

Split Airport is located to the west of Split close to the town of Trogir. It is 20 minutes drive from the airport to the ferry port in Split.
