About 20km north-west from Dubrovnik, on the main road to Split, there is a small hillside village of Brsecine, with about 90 inhabitants still living like their ancestors, enjoying the fresh sea air and fishing for a living, planting vineyards with Plavac, their indigenous dark grape, and farming, and more recently, tourism. If you take the steep village road down to the sea, within 1km you will reach a beautiful bay withan old stone villa, dating from the 16th century. This was once a castle and a summer home of a famous Croatian lady poet Cvieta Zuzoric, who alternated her living between Dubrovnik, Brsecine and Venice. She knew to pick a romantic seaside spot for her summer castle! It is a small village, but it managed to create two medieval churches, the church of St. George and a smaller church of St. Stephen. If you stay in any of the villas in Brsecine, the view will be memorable. The huge Adriatic panorama features the beguiling Elafite islands of Lopud and Sipan, both are a must for a day boat trip. On the Dubrovnik side, your closest shops and restaurants are in Trsteno, another gem in the Dubrovnik region. In Trsteno, do visit the famous botanical gardens, also stemming from the Renaissance era of the Dubrovnik Republic. Lose yourself among the fabulous Mediterranean trees and scented herbs, secret shady pathways and fabulous fountains, and then walk down a few minutes to the sea and dip in. A bit further away in the opposite direction, towards the magical and less well known Peljesac peninsula, is the village of Slano (12 km), where you can find a wellness centre and night entertainment, and further still, the unmissable restaurants of Ston and Mali Ston. Treat yourself to a beach picnic on the sandy beach in Prapratno and visit the famous wineries on the Peljesac peninsula.

A car is highly recommended, as a bus passes by only 2- 3 times a day. If you want peace, stunning sea views and closeness to the vibrant and unique Dubrovnik, Brsecine is a great choice.
