Sveta Nedjelja (local name for Santa Domenica) is the village nestling on the slopes below the highest peak on the island of Hvar, about 12 km east from the town of Hvar, officially the sunniest spot on the Adriatic. The coast on this side of the island is separated from the main towns by mountains and is therefore relatively isolated. The main road access to the village is through a tunnel from Jelsa on the other side of the island. The sun-drenched slopes above the village produce the famous grape "Plavac Mali" from which they make the delicious red wine Zlatni Plavac. The village is very tranquil, with red roofed residential homes scattered on the hillside, around the village church. There is a small market in the village and several restaurants that serve local dishes and excellent vines.
The atmosphere is one of the wholesome, sustainable living, and you will enjoy tasting great local olive oil, wines and lavender perfume. The local coast has several little coves with wonderful and uncrowded pebble beaches, one of them just below the village, reached by a path winding down through pine woods. The area around Sv. Nedjelja has some of the best rock climbing on Hvar. The weather is so good, you can climb all year round. Intact nature and clear sea add to the special atmosphere. All the villas in Sv. Nedljelja are suitable for relaxed family holidays, with a beach and lots to do. A special attraction is a mountain cave in which the Augustinian monks built a church and monastery in the 15th century and stayed there until 1787. The remains of the church can still be seen today and the hike is among the most spectacular on the island. This site was even used in the Neolithic era, and has a spiritual quality to it. The scenery from up there is stunning as is the view that reaches to Italy on clear days. Today, only the monastery church and a part of a shell of a house are preserved.
