Amazing beaches, great towns to visit and have fun, island trips, zip lines, masses to do in the Biokovo National Park. Makarska Riviera on the mainland coast, between Split and Dubrovnik, or more precisely, between Brela and Gradac, is famous for its top quality beaches, amongst the best and cleanest in Europe. Within an easy reach of Split airport, you drive past quaint seaside towns of Brela, Baska Voda, Tucepi, Podgora and Gradac. All these places have stunning beaches, and Makarska town has a mile long town beach curving along a protected bay, lined with palms on the town promenade. The back drop to the sunny blue coastline is the 5770 foot high Mount Biokovo, and many mountain trails lead up to it from Makarska.

Walk or cycle northwest along the coast all the way to Brela (nine miles) stopping off at beach bars and cafes. Dip into the sea wherever the fancy takes you and rest in the shade of the pinewoods. Northwest from here, you come to the small resort of Baska Voda, where the Nikolina white pebble beach has a Blue Flag for environmental standards, with sun beds for hire, showers, and life guards on duty through summer. A couple of miles farther on, blissful Punta Rata on the edge of Brela is many people’s favourite beach, voted by the Forbes magazine as one of the best in the world – easy to access, you walk into the shallow sandy sea, and its fully equipped with sun beds and umbrellas. Going east, you find Tucepi, a pleasant small-scale resort with a long pebble beach, a fishing village of Bratus which is very charming. Makarska Riviera provides fabulous swimming and water sports, lots of activities suitable for families with small children and teenagers, and it is mostly a tranquil region of beautiful nature and crystal coves. Makarska town is more lively, and offers great nightlife as well, night clubs, bars and harbour side restaurants. Overall there is plenty of relaxation and activity for a balanced holiday.
